Starting to get some words down!!

In preparation for my group review about the ideas for my research report I started to write my ideas properly down on paper:

Possible question?…

How has the impact of the digital age affected illustration? Looking into James Brocklehurst’s article: Tap my drawings and focusing on illustration’s role in the future of children’s story telling and the development of book apps.

(Points to include in essay:)

  • The general impact of digital technology = is there a space for illustration?
  •  Death of Print?
  • The impact of the Kindle/iPad on book illustration – where does it leave the book cover and illustration? Particularly for children’s books.
  • Book Apps
  • How is illustration evolving to digital means? Tales of the Night – folk tales translated to animation. Story telling = book apps – Alice for the iPad, Ustwo publisher’s PAPERCUT, NosyCrow publishers’ fairy tales.
  • How this physically impacts on traditional illustration… drawing on the page vs. viewed on a screen – Dave McKean’s illustrations.
  • Has illustration therefore de-valuing.
  • How will this affect the new generation and their learning?

“The dilemma of interactivity in book apps in being dealt with, less attention is given to illustrated content. Therefore, if illustrated content in book apps is given a higher status, the problem of interactivity needs to be sorted.” (Brocklehurst, 2012, p. 58)

Brocklehurst, J. 2012. Tap my drawings: The state of play in illustrated book apps. Varoom, Iss. 19 p. 58

   Draft Abstract:

Digital technology continues to impact everyday life and culture. Where the world is constantly evolving and adapting to technological advances, is there still space for illustration? Looking particularly into how children’s story-telling books are transitioning into a digital world resulting from the invention of iPads, Kindles and apps, where does illustration fit in? Illustration first transitioning into animations to portray narrative and now moving further into apps, it is only the start of what the illustrator has to offer the new generation and how it will impact on their learning. Responding to the article: ‘Tap My Drawings: The state of play in illustrated books apps’ in Varoom magazine, this essay questions what is in the current market and what the actual impact has had on the art world and what it means for the illustration’s future.

As well as my abstract I have also written a draft summary about my essay to get feedback on in the sessions from this I can start working more towards the whole draft to be submitting and also having a tutorial with Caitrin on thursday will help my progress and where I am going with it.
